A large turnout of HH Members travelled to Dragonmeet this year, London's permier RPG and Boardgame Convention.
Once again Roleplayers took over the conference centre at Kensington & Chelsea Town Hall for the day although the effects of the credit crunch on the games industry as a whole were evident at Dragonmeet 09 with no freebies at all this year!!. Coupled with LRTs decision to close the Circle Line the show had a slightly smaller feel than previous years with less buzz in the trade stands which was a shame as this was Dragonmeets 10th Anniversary.
The opposite, I'm glad to say was the case, when it came to the participation games. The usual scrum for morning session sign-ups was exacerbated by the lack of a Games List on the Dragonmeet website which meant that players needed to scan the one provided in their carrier bags . The variety of games on offer was still as good as in previous years so no change in the commitment level of the DMs who put on well over 40 sessions during the day.
Richard and Carol Cunningham and I managed to sign up to Marcus L Rowland's Forgotten Futures XI: Planets of Peril , A 1930s pulp Sci-Fi setting based on the works of Stanley Weinbaum. Paul, Mark, Apo, Bel and Greg signed on for a session of Paizo's Pathfinder RPG (Essentially D&D 3.5E). RWJ was spotted enjoying GURPS, Clare Hooper and family were secreted in one of the glass fronted side rooms playing Paranoia.
The afternoon session saw Carol Richard and I playing Cubicle 7's Starblazer which uses the action orientated FATE system.
There were plenty of Demos of Boardgames running throughout the day including; PitchCar (which looked like lots of fun), Wings of War Miniatures , Heroclix (with wonderful Thor's Chariot miniature), Dominion , Last Night on Earth , Smallworld , Icehouse , Cosmic Coasters , Flux , Munchkin and the ever so intriguing Kamisado .
Regional Qualifiers for Ticket to Ride also took place at Dragonmeet.
Sadly none of the HH members walked away with a Dragonmeet Raffle Prize which keeps up our 3-0 average, still there's always next year.
All in all a grand day out, I managed to play a few things I've wanted to play for a while and buy a few things I've on my BGG wishlist. Any members with photos of the event should post them to the HH Flickr group and if you want to add your take on the event please add to this article. |
